Jefferson West FFA members recently competed in the Northeast District Super CDE Day at Highland Community College. Four individuals competed in multiple contests - Milk Quality team of Chase, Braxdon, and Everett; and Mercadies in Floriculture.

Join us for our FFA Chapter Banquet on Sunday, April 26th at 3:00 PM at Jefferson West High School. The banquet will feature a guest speaker who is a current State FFA Officer, along with recognition of Greenhand Degrees, Chapter Degrees, and other outstanding awards. Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the event.

The Plant & Soil Science class at Jefferson West has been working in the Greenhouse. We are planning on having our plant sale on April 25th (8am-12Noon) and May 2nd (8-11am). If you have planters that need to be planted, please contact Mr. Bartel to arrange it. We have annuals and vegetables for sale. Please come and support our Ag program!

Our Boys Golf team began the season strongly, finishing second among 13 teams with a total score of 337. The top performers for the Tigers were medalist Gage Moser, Colter Berens, Jace Coleman, and Zach Gibson. Furthermore, Parker Petesch and Carsyn Wellman achieved top 20 finishes.

Golfer to watch!
Gage Moser wasted no time in establishing himself as one of Jefferson West’s top golfers, moving right into the varsity lineup as a freshman in 2024 and finishing the season as an All-Big Seven League selection. Over his first two seasons at West, Moser has already posted 10 top-10 finishes and recorded two tournament victories – the second of those coming at last year’s Jefferson West Invitational where he had his career-best round of 76. He improved his scoring average by eight strokes to an 82.4 and capped his sophomore season with a tie for 19th-place finish at the Class 3A state tournament, shooting a two-day total of 161.

Congratulations to our lady volleyball athletes that were recently named to the KVA All-Academic teams. Being an athlete takes a lot of time and dedication. This award is given, based off of the student-athlete's GPA during the first semester of this school year. The following is the criteria that had to be met:
The Kansas Volleyball Association All-Academic Team and Team Academic Awards are designed to honor high school varsity volleyball players, managers, and teams who have proven excellence in the classroom. The head coach must be a KVA member for his or her players to be eligible to receive academic awards.

To be eligible to receive the individual All-Academic award, individual players must be a varsity letter winner from the most recently completed season and have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.75 on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent on another scale, for classes taken during the FIRST SEMESTER of the current school year.

To be eligible to receive the Team Academic award, teams must have an average GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent on another scale, during the FIRST SEMESTER of the current school year. This will include GPAs from ALL players who competed at the varsity level.

The FFA Livestock Evaluation Career Development Event will be held in Seneca today. This is a competition where students evaluate, rank, and select livestock – beef cattle, sheep, swine, and meat goats – based on market and breeding criteria. Participants analyze animals against ideal industry standards, deliver oral reasons to justify their decisions, and develop critical thinking and communication skills.

Key Components & Usage Examples
• Evaluation & Ranking: Students analyze classes of four animals and rank them from best to worst based on structure, muscling, and performance, often using performance data
• Oral Reasons: Participants memorize and present a 1–2 minute speech to an official judge, defending their placing decisions.
• Species Evaluation: Judging includes market classes (fat/meat animals) and breeding classes (breeding stock selection).
• Knowledge Test: Contests often include written exams covering anatomy and industry knowledge.

Skills Developed
• Decision Making: Rapidly analyzing and placing animals under pressure.
• Public Speaking: Articulating reasons to officials.
• Industry Knowledge: Understanding ideal animal type, conformation, and production records.
